This insurance covers accidents during regular classes, school events and extracurricular activities (e.g., if you are injured in a physical education class or burned in an experiment in class). Insurance money is paid for such accidents depending on the severity.

This insurance is a good idea; if you would like to enroll, please ask at the Student Division (Gakusei-ka).

All foreign residents who stay in Japan longer than one year must join the National Health Insurance program.

If you join the National Health Insurance Plan, you pay only up to 30% of each medical bill. You need to pay a premium for the insurance, but it is very helpful if you are hospitalized due to serious illness or injuries. Particularly if you have a family, your expenditures for medical care will be greatly reduced. Application for joining this program is made at a municipal office.

The charge and the date of payment are notified by an invoice every year. If you fail to pay the charge on time, you have to pay a late charge, so be sure be sure to pay the charge by the due date.

The health insurance fee can be paid either at the appropriate counter at the municipal office or at the bank. It is also possible to pay the health insurance fee on a monthly basis by direct debit from your bank account.

You are requested to notify the municipal office if you change your address or apply for an extension of period of stay. When you leave Japan after the expiration of your term of study, you are strongly requested to notify the office in order to cancel the program, return the health insurance card and make the last payment.

International students who receive medical treatment from certified health insurance doctors owing to illness or physical injury will be partly reimbursed by the Association of International Education, Japan (Nihon Kokusai Kyoiku Kyokai).
