Outline of the department

The Department of Public Health Nursing is designed to prepare undergraduate students to assume leadership in the field of public health, which focuses on population level health, wellness, health promotion and disease prevention. The courses give essential skills and knowledge needed to assess communities and populations, identify high risk groups and their health needs, and develop culturally sensitive and realistic nursing interventions, in partnership with communities and other stakeholders. Upon graduation, students will have met the educational requirements for the exam leading to the National Public Health Nurse License.

The Department also offers a Master's Degree program that prepares nurses for advanced positions of leadership and management in community and public health nursing. Students study theoretical foundations and research methods that relate to health promotion and disease prevention. The courses cover various areas, including application of epidemiology; evaluation of public health policy, development of community based intervention strategies and advanced practices of health promotion. The program requires students to submit a thesis and pass an oral examination in defense of the thesis. Prospective students should consult with the appropriate supervisor prior to applying.
