Outline of the department

[Mission of CERA]
The newly opened CERA is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology budget for the 2012-2013 year and is the
first research building as a base for epidemiological research in Japan.

The aims of CERA are
"To create the base of epidemiological research in Asia, to
promote the leading-edge and international collaborative
epidemiological research of various diseases focused on
cardiovascular disease and diabetes, to improve education and
study in Shiga University of Medical Science and to contribute
to the development of medicine and epidemiology in Japan and
  in the world."

[Goals]
The center was established in 2013 to promote the following two fields:

Research
The main areas of research to be conducted at CERA involve:
1.International collaborative epidemiological research focused on Asia
2.Leading-edge epidemiological research based on local populations

Education
By training epidemiologists specializing in the field of
lifestyle-related diseases, we aim to accomplish the following:

1 Create epidemiologic data focused on cardiovascular disease and diabetes
for prevention of lifestyle-related diseases in Asian countries

2 Offer training for both domestic and international students in our
     graduate program

3 Train specialists in epidemiological research to focus on
     lifestyle-related diseases

4 Utilize the most advanced techniques in epidemiological research to share
     up-to-date information from Japan

5 Promote new developments in cooperation with the industry to prevent
     cardiovascular diseases and diabetes

6 Communicate findings from our research in order to help adopt improved
health measurement tools, as well as to apply novel approaches to
lifestyle-related disease prevention in the Japanese population

7 Provide continuing education for specialists in epidemiologic research,
especially in the field of lifestyle-related diseases within medical
     institutions, companies and organizations
