Introduction

Shiga University of Medical Science (SUMS) is a national university which was founded in 1974. Last year marked the twentieth anniversary of its foundation. The university has been actively expanding its departments and facilities. In 1989, the Molecular Neurobiology Research Center was opened. And in 1994, the Faculty of Nursing was newly established.
A total of 1,343 students have graduated from the university, and 314 graduate students have received the degree of Doctor of Medical Science.

SUMS also has vibrant international exchange programs for students, researchers and scholars. Cooperative exchange agreements have been signed with six universities overseas, including three in China, one in the United States, one in Canada, and one in Italy. Under the programs, many foreign students are now pursuing studies and research. To provide them with comfortable and affordable housing, a new International House was opened in 1994.

The SUMS campus, covering an area of 233,017 m2, is one of the most beautiful in Japan. Surrounded by trees, it is located on a hill within an officially designated "cultural zone" near Otsu City, the capital of Shiga Prefecture. Lake Biwa, one of Japan's largest and most beautiful lakes, can be seen to the north. The cultural zone also contains a public library, the Shiga Museum of Modern Art, and public gardens, making it an ideal area to enjoy the changes of the seasons. In addition, the university is near the ancient capital of Kyoto, providing easy access to the benefits offered by a large city. (March 1995)
