Developing True Global Leaders

For both universities and the field of medicine, people are the most important asset. In the future here at Shiga University of Medical Science, our goal is to form leaders of the next generation who have not only refined, ethical “research minds” filled with wisdom in a wide variety of fields, but also have high aspirations to work throughout the local area, the country, and the world. We consider achieving this goal to be one of the most important jobs for our university’s program “Reducing the burden of non-communicable disease (NCD) in the Asian Pacific region.” We believe that doctors who have completed this graduate program will lead the way as experts in the search for solutions for NCD in Asia and the rest of the world. While gathering a top-class teaching staff throughout the country and acquiring mutual participation between industry, university, and government, this program will put our NCD epidemiologic research base to its full use in order to develop true global leaders.

Utilizing Epidemiology to Overcome NCD in Asia

This program is centered on epidemiology. In order to overcome NCD, which has spread throughout both developed and developing countries, it has become a vital factor to have a strong command of epidemiology. At Shiga University of Medical Science, we have not only an abundance of achievements and a strong international network, we have also established Japan’s very first “Research Base for Epidemiology”: “the Center for Epidemiologic Research in Asia.” Within this environment, we are able to conduct leading-edge research and further improve our ability to put epidemiology to practical use. We await those with high ambitions who aim to become leaders in overcoming NCD in Asia.
