　私はこれまで動物実験を用いた基礎研究に長く携わってきました。研究の対象であった遺伝子が精神疾患と関連していたところから、精神疾患に興味を持つようになりました。基礎研究でも引き続き精神疾患に関係することを研究していますが、動物実験で得られた結果は、なかなか人に貢献できるまでには時間がかかります。そこで、何か人に対しても直接貢献できるような研究はできないかと考えていたところ、疫学に出会いました。このプログラムでは、本大学で長年行われてきた非感染性疾患、主に循環器疾患、がん、糖尿病などを対象とした疫学研究を授業で学ぶことや現在進行中のプロジェクトに関わる機会があります。授業は、すべて英語ですが、少人数のクラスのため授業中に分からないところは質問できますし、授業が終わった後でも留学生たちと質問や議論など理解を深めあうこともあります。医学や疫学のことは初心者でしたが、このプログラムで必要なことは体系的に学ぶことができるので、これから勉強をはじめたいという方にもお勧めです。現在は、質問で得られた抑うつ尺度と社会的要因や生活習慣との関連を調べています。自分の興味ある分野での社会的課題について仮説をたてて、解析をして関連を調べることができるので、挑戦しがいがあると思います。 多国籍な学生と日々触れ合いながら異文化交流ができるので、日本にいながらグローバルな環境に身をおく良い機会です。将来グローバルで活躍したい方、一度見学に来てみて下さい。

I am a graduate student at Shiga University of Medical Science (SUMS). I joined the Leading Program in October, 2014 under the program for reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Asian-Pacific region. The Program has given me an excellent opportunity to study NCDs and I am looking forward to gain more knowledge on the distribution, prevention, treatment and the risk factors associated with NCDs. I envisage learning from experts from SUMS and others from all over the world. I come from Kenya; a developing country in Africa that is in the early stages of epidemiological transition and in dire need for experts in the prevention and treatment of NCDs which are emerging as serious health challenges to primary health. My training under the Leading Program is thus timely and imperative as it will adequately prepare me to enormously get involved in the initiatives in the development of measures against NCDs in the Asian-Pacific region, my country Kenya and in the world as a whole.

I worked as a medical statistician in Viet Nam. Although there is existing information on NCDs prevalence and their risk factors, more recent and context-specific information is required for planning and monitoring interventions against NCDs. The Leading Graduate Program on NCDs helps to equip the students with the knowledge and skills to understand the determinants of non-communicable diseases and formulate preventive and management strategies in different contexts. Therefore, I believe it is a very suitable program for those who want to become experts in the field of NCDs’ epidemiology.
