Our program has been selected as a Program for Leading Graduate School by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, Sports and Technology of Japan.

Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), which have been rapidly increasing, not only in advanced nations but on a global scale, are deemed the core public health issue of the 21st century. In fact, the current Secretary General of the United Nations (U.N.) held a special U.N. summit meeting on NCDs where he highlighted the U.N. mission to prevent and control NCDs. Currently, government agencies and academic institutions of various nations are working together to take action against NCDs. The growing rates of NCDs include lifestyle-related diseases such as cancer, cerebral and cardiac vascular diseases as well as their associated risk factors including diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. In order to solve the growing health problems and extend healthy lives in Asian Pacific nations, future global leaders need to be educated on the serious health issues related to NCDs in emerging nations in Asia.

The NCD Program makes the best of the solid base for epidemiologic research in lifestyle-related diseases at Shiga University of Medical Science. Students will gain medical knowledge of NCDs, working knowledge of epidemiological methodology, and other advanced technological expertise that should foster their ability to think outside of the box to develop novel solutions for improving public health in Asia. Students will also develop an extensive network of contacts across industry, government and academia. The ultimate goal of the NCD Program is to develop experts to serve as leaders who will combat NCDs by playing active roles in broad areas of industry, government, and academia in Japan and abroad.

The NCD Program is designed to develop versatile leaders with diverse attributes.
