International Freshman Applicants

The Undergraduate School of Medicine consists of the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing. SUMS considers freshman applicants for Spring admission only. Classes start at April and are entirely taught in Japanese. To successfully complete your course, you need to be a competent user of Japanese.

Admission Requirements

The applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements before entering SUMS. Contact the admissions office for details.

  • Complete twelve years of school education
  • Recognized Equivalent of a High School Diploma Recognition for having academic abilities equivalent or superior to a secondary school graduate

Student Selection

International students follow essentially the same procedure and have the same application requirements as all other students.

Applicant must take The Common Test for University Admissions and the second-stage entrance examinations of SUMS.

Transfer Program

There are three ways to apply to SUMS for transfer admission. As Medical students, courses begin in the sophomore at the second semester in  April. Students may transfer from fully accredited four- or two -year institutions. In the course, Classes are entirely taught in Japanese. To successfully complete your course, you need to be a competent user of Japanese.

Transfer Application Requirements

Please note that International students follow essentially the same procedure and have the same application requirements as all other students to enter as transfer students.

Transfer Application for the School of Medicine

  1. Completion a four-year bachelor degree that earned at a university in Japan or other countries. Students who have bachelor degree in medicine are ineligible to apply for.
  2. Completion of a master’s or doctoral program. Students who have any degree in medicine are ineligible to apply for.
  3. Receipt of a bachelor’s degree by the National Institution for Academic Degrees in Japan.

Graduate School of Medicine

General Description

The Graduate School of Medicine consists of the Doctoral Program of Medicine and the Master's Program of Nursing. SUMS essentially considers applicants for both courses for Spring submission only. We provide flexible, part-time graduate courses including long-term courses and evening courses. The courses available have been designed with the needs of students go to graduate school while working. Classes are mostly taught in Japanese. You need to be a competent user of Japanese to successfully complete your course.

Master's Program of Nursing

The aim of this program is to educate students to be experts in nursing who have highly advanced knowledge and professional skills for sophisticated nursing care services, making the use of our educational research resources (the accumulated wisdom and experiences at the faculty, the university hospital and the affiliated facilities), in order to respond adequately to the various requests regarding today's health problem.

After having received the required number of credits with at least two years of study, having completed an acceptable Master's thesis with the necessary research instructions, and passing the final examinations, the student is awarded a Master's degree.

Doctoral Program of Medicine

The aim of this program is to educate students to be great researchers in the field of medicine who have the sophisticated ability to research creatively and independently and also who have wide scholarship and well-rounded character. The mission of this program is to contribute to the development of medical science and the improvement of social welfare.

This program consists of the following three courses:

  1. Advanced Medical Science Course
  2. Advanced Medicine for Clinicians Course
  3. Interdisciplinary Medical Science and Innovation Course

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Graduate School of Medicine must satisfy one of the conditions shown below, or must be expected to satisfy one before entering SUMS; by March 31st of the year of admission. Contact SUMS admissions office for details.

Please note that International students follow essentially the same procedure and have the same application requirements as all other students to enter to our graduate school.
Only the Doctoral Program examination can be taken in English. The selection includes written examinations, an interview and submitted documents. Each program has its own selection measure. For more information, contact the Admissions Office.

Master's Program (Master's Program of Nursing)

  1. Graduation from a university
  2. Receipt of a bachelor’s degree
  3. Completion of sixteen years of school education abroad
  4. Recognition by the Graduate School as having an ability equivalent or superior to a university graduate in their individual qualification screening process, and students who are at the age of 22 or more.

Doctoral Program (Doctoral Program of Medicine)

Completion six-year bachelor degree in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine
Completion of eighteen years of school education abroad and bachelor degree in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine
Recognition by the Graduate School in their individual qualification screening process as being equal or superior to a university graduate in medicine, dentistry or the six-year course of veterinary medicine, and students who are at the age of 24 or more.
