長く暑かった夏もようやく終わりを迎え、湖国にも秋の気配を少しずつ感じる季節となってまいりました。
本日ここに、令和７年度秋季滋賀医科大学大学院医学系研究科入学宣誓式を挙行できることを、心から嬉しく思います。

このたび、大学院医学系研究科医学専攻博士課程に進学された７名の皆さん、看護学専攻博士前期課程に進学された３名の皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。なお、医学専攻博士課程に入学された７名のうち４名は、外国からの留学生です。

また、昨年の開学５０周年を機に、大学院医学系研究科に、学術交流協定校であるマレーシア国民大学との間で、両国の共通課題である「高齢化」をテーマとした教育を行い、共同で学位を授与するジョイント・ディグリー・プログラム（JDP）の設置を計画し、本日、令和７年１０月１日から新たに「滋賀医科大学・マレーシア国民大学国際連携エイジングサイエンス専攻博士課程」を開設しました。同プログラムには、双方の大学に１名ずつ、計２名の皆さんが入学されました。誠におめでとうございます。本日入学された合計１１名の皆さんを心から歓迎いたします。

さて、本日、入学された皆さんは、これからの２年間または４年間、医学・看護学のそれぞれの分野で研究を行うことになります。最初は研究者としての素養と基本的な研究遂行能力を修得するためのトレーニングの期間ですが、同時に、科学者としての心構えと倫理観を身に付ける重要な期間でもあります。科学者として、偽りなく真摯に研究を遂行することは当然のことですが、近年のIT技術の進歩と情報公開制度の発達に伴い、ほとんどの研究成果が誰の目にもオープンとなる環境になってきました。研究成果のオープン化はあるべき姿として喜ばしいことですが、現状では研究不正事案の告発が後を絶たない状況となっています。当たり前のことですが、研究を公正に遂行することの重要性を認識して取り組んでください。一方で、研究により培われる、真摯に物事に取り組む習慣は、今後の医学・看護学の実践においても極めて重要な基盤となり、皆さんの大きな財産となります。

現在、皆さんは大学院生としてどのような研究に取り組んでいくのか、志を高く持たれていることでしょう。あるいは、医師や看護師などの社会人としての経験をもとに、研究テーマを温められているかもしれません。いずれにしてもこれからの皆さんの研究は、指導教員の指導を受けながらも世界で唯一無二のもの、皆さん自身のオリジナルな研究となります。また、本学では、多くの研究者が広い範囲で、多くの基礎研究を行っています。指導教員と相談し、新しい環境に飛び込んでみるのも、自分のキャリアを広げるのに役立つのではないかと思います。

また、国際連携専攻では、日本とマレーシアという文化的・社会的背景が異なる両国において、共通課題である「高齢化」に関して基礎から最先端までの専門的知識と研究技術を、医学・生命・研究倫理を含めて体系的に学ぶこととなります。老化によって増加する認知症、がん、生活習慣病等の疾患により生じる健康課題を解決できる、エイジングサイエンスの国際的なリーダーを目指し、多様性を理解する能力と幅広い視野を養いつつ、研究に取り組まれることを期待します。 皆さんの大学院での研究生活が、実り多いものになることを願っています。

I am very pleased to welcome you as graduate students to Shiga University of Medical Science. I suppose you all have your own ideas of your research from your experiences as medical doctors or young scientists. I hope you keep strong motivation to pursue truth of science in your research, through deep thinking by yourself and in collaboration with your colleagues and professors.

At the same time, you will learn basic methods to perform research properly. It is very important for all researchers to learn and understand research ethics to prevent research misconduct. Along with the development of information technology and information disclosure system, all research products are open to the public, and everybody can see your research products. As a result, unfortunately, we are faced with the fact that there are still many research misconduct cases in the world as well as in this country. Therefore, you should perform your research properly and sincerely, according to research rules and ethics.

I encourage you to conduct research with your own originality, which should be only one in the world, and remember that good collaborations with your colleagues and professors will make it possible. I also hope that you all enjoy your life in Japan by making new friendship at Shiga University of Medical Science.

Furthermore, students enrolled in the SUMS-UKM International Joint PhD Program will systematically acquire specialized knowledge and research techniques, from foundational to cutting-edge, including ethics in medicine, life sciences, and research, regarding the common challenge of “aging” in Japan and Malaysia, two countries with distinct cultural and social backgrounds. We expect you to pursue research while developing an appreciation for diversity and cultivating a broad perspective, with the aim of becoming international leaders in aging science who can address health issues associated with dementia, cancer, and lifestyle-related diseases that increase with aging.

I wish you a fruitful research life in our graduate school.
